Perhaps its because I expected little, but I'll be gosh darned if I didn't actually enjoy myself during X-men Origins: Wolverine. Sure, there's a few moments with laughably bad special effects - but to be fair there are a few fairly neato ones as well - and the dialogue is cliched and characters that comic fans know and love are altered and butchered beyond recognition, but there's also a fine sense of fun going on here.

I think that part of the intense critical and message board bashing of this film is due in no small part to last summer's one two punch of The Dark Knight and Iron Man (which, in the case of the latter, I didn't love nearly as much as most people but still see how it was a serious and well made piece of film in addition to being a comic book spectacle). These two powerhouses, coupled with the less successful but no less serious and epic March release Watchmen altered people's expectations of what a comic book film should be instead of (as I think they should have) what a comic book film can be. I'm not trying to say that comic book movies and/or summer blockbusters should be allowed to suck, but just that they don't all need to be genre defining epics with unique storylines and top notch production values. Which Wolverine most certainly is not.

But it is a film that has fun with itself, keeps the excitement up, is well paced, is by and large cast well (Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber and Danny Huston do a great deal to keep this film from being a lot less respectable, often in spite of itself) and contains a storyline I didn't necessarily expect. Not that said story is any less cliche than you might think, but just that it wasn't exactly what I thought I was going to get. Wolverine becoming Wolverine is actually only a small part of this brisk 107 minute action film; its more like just another early but pivotal pre X-men adventure of the sassy Canadian. There's a mystery that's easy to solve - especially if you've read the comics - but at least the story tries to have a mystery and not just a straightforward narrative that takes Jackman's character from a simplistic Point A to a slightly less simplistic Point B. Fanboys will probably hate it for what it does to Deadpool, Singer's previous far superior X-men films and even Wolveringe himself, and at the end of the day its probably not all that memorable, but I'd be lying if I said X-men Origins: Wolverine wasn't worth my hard earned dollars.

...At matinee ticket prices, of course.

I just can't bring myself to actually go to this.  It just looks SO bad.  And I'm still pissed at spending money to see X3 (what a piece of shit movie), which Wolverine seems to have closest ties to when comparing it to the three X films.  Eh, maybe a Netflix rental down the road...

i was so pissed off when i left this movie.  how the studio could present such a terrible movie for such an awesome comic trademark is beyond me. hugh and liev are the only redeeming factors.

current listenings:
Of Virtue - "Heartsounds"
Capsule - "No Ghost"
Century - "Red Giant"
James Vincent McMorrow - "Early In The Morning"
Blind Pilot - "We Are The Tide"

I was so psyched when the previews for this were shown.  I ruined it and saw the workprint, but even still the movie felt very underwhelming.  It seemed like it just flew by.

I thought it was pretty awesome. i didn't care at all for any of the love type stuff but otherwise felt well paced and with enough action and story to keep me entertained.

Pretty much this. Wolverine was a fucking terrible movie. Not because we are comic enthusiasts. It's just NOT A GOOD MOVIE... period. My friends and were so pissed off. Had I known that they wanted to walk like I wanted to, we would have pulled a Karman and split.

Maybe it's just me, but even if I went to a movie and thought it was terrible, I'd still sit through and finish watching it.

Screw that! I got better things to do with my time. When you're at a movie, there should be a disclaimer that appears at the bottom of the screen, probably at about 45 minutes in, that states that this is last chance you have to leave a film and still receive a refund.

Well, this did well enough that they've already green-lit a sequel and a Deadpool spin-off movie.  Suck.

Wow. I can’t WAIT to be in line for those films. And to say one thing about Jeff’s very generous review, me and my crew were not expecting The Dark Knight, Iron Man, or even The Incredible Hulk. We were just expecting an OKAY movie with a vaguely comprehensible story. We were surprised at how bad it was.

on a non-wolverine note....i dont know about that walking out of movies business either. you paid your money, why not just stay? you arent getting the money back. as a critic i get to see movies for free sometimes, and ive definitely wanted to walk out of a few of those (flightplan, memoirs of a geisha and the mummy 3 spring to mind) but if i laid down 5-10 dollars im getting some movie, whether it sucks or not.

and i dont know if you were serious about the refund, mj, but i think its highly problematic to be giving out refunds based on whether you liked the movie or not, even if you leave way early. ive seen people walk out of a movie like 20 minutes in and try to get their money back, not sure if they ever succeeded, but it just seems silly to me.

oh yeah, and what was incomprehensible about the story? I think it was pretty easy to follow...too easy, if anything.

Yeah, a movie has never been bad enough to make me leave. A few times I've wanted to, but then I just shove more popcorn into my mouth and ride the syrupy-nonbutter-substance high.

Oh, and I probably won't see this unless I'm REALLY bored. Man, I hated X3, and this looks like the exact same kind of bad.

This movie was bad when it leaked online a few months back.
Are people actually spending money on this bullshit?

Jesus Christ Jeff, I thought it would be OBVIOUS I was joking about the refunds! You've been doing this too long. Shouldn't you be writing some new songs or something? Not wasting time covering shitty movies?

yeah i figured you were joking about the refunds (especially the disclaimer coming up 45 minutes in part hehe) I just used it as an excuse to talk about how ive seen people walk out and try for refunds for that very reason. it does exist!
