I'm sure there will be a review up in the next day or so, but I want to talk about it now...

My spoiler free review:

I was extremely skeptical going in to the new Star Trek
film. I loved a lot of the original films and simply didn't think a) a
reboot was necessary and b) that JJ Abrams was the right person at the
helm. The old films still stand up, and I felt that any new incarnation
would only tarnish the series (I'm looking at you Star Wars). And I've never liked anything J.J. Abrams has done (in fact, I despise most of it). Lost and Alias both seemed silly to me, MI3 was the absolute worst of the Mission Impossible series (and had the lamest villain death I can think of from any film), and Cloverfield
was one of the most shallow, mindless, and flat-out boring films I saw
last year. My reluctance continued after seeing the new film's
trailers, which made the film out to be a mindless CGI-fest set to
betray everything I love about the franchise.

But I am happy to report that absolutely loved Star Trek.
Right from the very beginning it took me back to when I was little and
would endlessly rewatch my dad's VHS box set of the first six films. I
never onced questioned Pine and Quinto as Kirk and Spock, and the time
travel storyline was the perfect way to restart the franchise without
abandoning everything the previous films and television had setup. I
had assumed that having Leonard Nimoy in the film was simply a
desperate attempt to please fanboys, but (while it still may have been
that), he was worked in perfectly.

That's not to say the entire
film was perfect. The action sequences were lame, a bit too
over-the-top, over-long, and far too reliant on computer effects (but
that's just as much a complaint about modern action films as it is
about this specific movie). The cast also didn't entirely work, I never
fully bought Saldana and Urban as Uhura and Bones, and was constantly
comparing them to the originals. Eric Bana was also a bit underused and
under developed, and never once felt like a real threat. But these
minor quibbles did little to prevent my enjoyment of the overall
picture.

I went into the theater tonight expecting to hate the
film, but came out completely loving it. I would be shocked if any
other big summer blockbuster bests it.

8/10

I can't wait until Sunday when I finally get to go see this.  Taking my mom to it for Mother's Day.  She's just as much of a Trek nerd as me :-)

Saw this last night. I really didn't think it was that good. Granted, it was no way near as bad as Wolverine, but the film was mediocre at best.

Since when did Star Trek become a Michael Bay film in space? All action, all the time? *head explodes* Even at the age of 29, my nature of how a view movies must be very old-fashioned or something. It's that, or because I don't have ADD or ADHD like most of today's population. Because I'd rather have good acting, a deep story, and well-developed characters than explosions, gunfire, sword battles and high-speed chases EVERY FIVE MINUTES. I'm not saying these things don't have their place in films (or camp or popcorn cheesiness for that fact), but I'm used to it MAKING SENSE in Star Trek films and TV, even the bad ones... With this one it does NOT, most of the time.

Sub-par acting was no stranger here. For example, the guy they had playing Kirk's dad was FUCKING TERRIBLE. I know it was a small part, but Jesus Christ, the scene he is in is very important and needed to convey a lot of emotion. But it doesn't, since he's making Hayden Christensen look like Matt Damon.

The Romulans were scary at first. Eric Bana playing Nero was a total badass for the first section of the film or so. But once you get to the core, paper-thin plot, they become totally deflated and completely ridiculous. Their movitation for what they are doing and why they are doing it is full of unexplainable plot holes and completely<br /> <!--<br /> /* Style Definitions */<br /> p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal<br /> {mso-style-parent:"";<br /> margin:0in;<br /> margin-bottom:.0001pt;<br /> mso-pagination:widow-orphan;<br /> font-size:12.0pt;<br /> font-family:"Times New Roman";<br /> mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";}<br /> @page Section1<br /> {size:8.5in 11.0in;<br /> margin:99.25pt 85.05pt 85.05pt 85.05pt;<br /> mso-header-margin:.5in;<br /> mso-footer-margin:.5in;<br /> mso-paper-source:0;}<br /> div.Section1<br /> {page:Section1;}<br /> -->        unbelievable.

hey this is a fine review as far as Im concerned....my priveleges or whatever they are called are being strange and I cant get in to post movie reviews but once I do I think I'll cut and paste this into the movie review section. welcome to the club cameron!

as far as my thoughts on this film, I'd say it was pretty good but I'm not sure if it will be the best of the summer, or if I could even say I loved it. It was certainly miles better than Wolverine, but if I had to compare it to something I'd say I felt the same way about this as I did about last summer's Iron Man. I recognize and appreciate how well made it was, and how much it got right, but viscerally speaking something about it just didnt grab me. Maybe its just not my cup of tea, since I haven't really seen much Star Trek (a few episodes of next generation and deep space nine, and that Undiscovered Country sequel are the extent of my exposure).

I thought the action was actually well done, albeit a bit overly crammed in for the sake of what I saw as trying to be like "Hey! Star Trek isnt nerdy! Its super exciting! We blow shit up!". The time travel element was neato (albeit super simplistic) since I love that sort of stuff, and Bana's character was definitely cool but definitely underused.

As far as your review Cameron, I gotta say it sounds like you were a bit tainted by your prior love of Star Trek and low expectations. I don't see how you can say you love a movie but then say the action scenes (which make up the majority of the film) are terrible and a lot of the cast is no good. Seems like you just liked the Star Trek-ness of it more than anything specific about this film, and if I was a betting man I'd say over time your opinion of this film will diminish. Not that there's anything wrong with any of that, of course. Just sayin'.

As for MJ, I think at this point I can safely say that mainstream films are just not for you. You're a tough bird to please.

Trash is trash, Jeff. Mainstream or not. Hey, I loved The Dark Knight. I loved Iron Man. I loved Edward Norton's Hulk. I even LOVED Transformers (flaws aside, Bay didn't take a dump on my childhood).

Like said before. Action is great and all. And I love a senseless bloodbath. (Punisher: Warzone, check it out!) But a lot of what Star Trek is at its core has very little to do with action scenes. A new direction is fine, and I'm open to change. But that doesn't mean you have to dumb it down because everyone's on behavioral control pills these days.

And since this was a reboot of the franchise, plus with them showing things that haven't really been shown before (rising up in the academy), it would have been nice for them to spend a little more time developing these ideas (similar to Batman Begins) instead of quickly rushing to the next action sequence to appease the below 90 IQ crowd. Just like you said, it didn't need the "we blow shit up" OVERKILL. Much like X-Men Origins: Wolverine has little do with any actual origins whatsoever, while not nearly as bad, Star Trek's character development is also thin and fairly patchy.

I'm not saying the film is terrible or anything. There are some very fun moments to be had here. But it could have been so much better. Especially since the movie isn't NEARLY as good as it's currently being hyped up to be.

You're definitely right. My positive reaction to the film probably has more to do with how they didn't really fuck anything up than it has to do with it actually being a good film.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't remember the film being nearly as action packed as you guys are saying. The action sequences were certainly there, but definitely not every five minutes like MJ Austin is saying. I didn't see the 'we blow shit up overkill' you are claiming, and that was something I was weary of going into it.

Every five minutes is just an exaggeration due to my excitement. But there are many scenes that are just completely unnecessary. I'd go into detail, but let's not spoil anything for those that haven't seen it.

alright MJ, i misjudged you....anyone who can enjoy the crazy badassery on display in punisher war zone (fuck yeah jimmy mcnulty!!) certainly enjoys mainstream filmmaking.

And my point about your opinion of the film vs its action, cameron, wasnt as much how many minutes is action but how I felt it was certainly an action oriented film, so to say you loved it but hated the action seems weird to me because it was, like most summer movies, completely based around its action scenes.

I probably should have been more specific. My complaints about the action sequences were more about the skydiving/drill scene and the final phaser battle on the Romulan ship. I quite enjoyed the opening attack.

For me, this was one of those movies that's highly enjoyable while you're watching it, but it seems to suck more and more with each step you take away from the theater. And here's a pointer for the writers: If you know absolutely nothing about what black holes are or how they work, it might be a good idea to avoid writing an entire movie about them.

edit: I'm still looking forward to the next one. I think this showed promise, even if I probably won't see it again unless someone buys it for me.

Do YOU know exactly how singularities and and black holes work? Do you have a LHC that you do experiments with? Sure, it's not probable, but writers have been using Dues Ex Machina's since before Shakespear was conceived. Just fucking go with it and enjoy the show. Is Star Trek supposed to be the most realistic space opera EVER! Absolutely not. It's meant to explore the possibilites of the future, while exploring human nature when in the face of said future. This isn't Slumdog or Schindler's List. Just have fun.

I had never watched Star Trek. I always thought that you were either a Star Wars fan or a Star Trek fan, and I grew up loving Star Wars.
So when I sat down at the theaters with my friends, I had this idea that I was going to hate the movie.

By the time I left, I was totally in love!! This movie is awesome. I think that when they can get people who sit down to watch the movie with the idea in their heads that they will hate the movie to like it, that says a lot.
I loved it.

Btw, does anyone think that the Who would make great vulcans? just saying...
