Genuine Indie
I must admit, I fucking hate the definition of american "indie" bands, they never seem to be truly indie to me. Perhaps I'm just misunderstanding the term, but if you want to check out some real fuckin' indie, get your ass to a store and buy a Libertines album, preferrably "up the bracket", stick that in your stereo, and then reconsider many, many bands' statuses as indie.

the definition has definitely morphed over the year, i'll give you that.

Having now heard them, death cab and somerset, bands of that ilk, I guess indie just means something completely different in UK. But make sure you get that Libertines album!!

i don't even know what would be classified as "indie" anymore. the market is getting more and more saturated with the stuff, I don't even know what passes for "indie"

remember when indie stood for "independent?" Indie referred to bands that did shit on their own without any help from a label or anyone's money.

i think "indie," now, has become synonymous with "guitar pop/rock." consider these "indie" bands and tell me i'm wrong:

modest mouse
death cab
shins
minus the bear
rilo kiley

somehow, this is indie, but it's basically just pop. personally, genre classification is kinda silly, but yeah, it irks me when people don't know what's what, ie, "Fall Out Boy is Punk." god. welcome to Beaverton.

yeah, genre classification does suck quite bad, but there is really no way around doing it... imagine a record store that doesn't have stuff divided by genres. we have people that can't even find a CD though they are in alphabetical order... it's sad. and while none of those bands are truly "indie" and while Fall Out Boy isn't punk and etc..., no one wants to label them as "pop" because the pop genre has such a negative connatation attached to it due to artists like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the all the boy bands... people have lost sight of what pop really is... much like they have lost sight of what every other genre really is.

but how many times do you go to a store and find an "Indie" or "Punk" section? in the end it's all Rock/Pop. Metal sometimes gets its own section. why wouldn't you want to name FOB pop? it's what they are. they are pop musicians with electric guitars. hence "guitar-pop."

It's funny how nearly every thread I've posted is rooted in the misgivings of narrow genre classifications, I agree with everything being said but I still think that the US definition of Indie is crazy.

good point! i wish there were more genre sections in most stores... and I don't hesitate to call FOB pop, b/c that is what they are. However, if someone says hey, what music does that band Fall Out Boy play, and you reply with pop, either you get someone putting the album back down thinking it is just another radio band that doesnt write their own songs or you get asked, what do ya mean "pop"? i'm not disagreeing with you, as I feel the same as you... however, unfortunately the genre lines are so blurred and butchered that the only way to convey your message of what a band sounds like is to push their sound into a genre based on what the person asking is familiar with... pop-punk happens to be the most accessible one for Fall Out Boy, because ppl have come to see that genre as stuff like New Found Glory and etc... perhaps if people as a whole knew more about what each genre really entails, then we could say pop or guitar-pop or something like that, however... most ppl have a mainstream idea of genre classification, thus you have to adapt to convey your message

genres are pointless, you either like it or you don't

I understand the need for some type of system to organize discs in a store but other than that there really is no point.

not definition... i just feel they're a more legitimate occupier of the label. To use one band as a definition is lazy, but on the other hand I do feel they capture the essence of what indie is all about, so yes and no.

I never thought to call The Libertines indie, somehow, always considered them pop/punk of some kind

when I think of an indie "sound" I think of guitar based rock/pop that tries to transcend the usual flock of guitar based rock/pop. so at its best you have The Shins and whatnot, but at its worst you have a pool of really boring bands. i think there's a distinction between "indie" as in independant, "indie" as in a certain genre, and "indie" as a way of describing a person who listens to lesser-known music.

for me, Yo La Tengo is probably the one band that has the essence of 'indie' sound, whatever that may be

The Libertines are the complete antithesis of pop, and I certainly wouldn't regard them as punk either, sorry, definitely indie.
