Converge

Posted 10/17/2009 by Aaron Yarborough

Axe to Fall is the best collection of songs the group has written outside of Jane Doe and, with time, may even surpass the monolithic level of praise heaped upon what many consider their crowning achievement. Fighting through impossibly high expectations, negative critics and the tumult rippling through the music world, Converge has yet again proven why they are one of the most revered underground bands ever to lay music to tape. Axe to Fall isn’t just another album – it represents the anger, the sadness and the unrest faced by us all in this time of socioeconomic instability and fear. It is the sound of discontent and the cry of the masses. Let us stand together and sing its praises. --Matt Murphy (DecoyMusic.com)

If the new Dredg and Isis albums are 5/5, Axe To Fall might as well be The White Album.

So does Britney Spears - it doesn't guarantee quality.

Dredg and Isis write music.

You can't be serious. Dredg made an at best mediocre album compared to their previous offerings and you slobbered over it and Converge makes something that is revolutionary in the heavy music realm and you shake your head at it.

Most of my best friends are music majors and they are flipping at the musicality of Axe to Fall. Don't pretend like they aren't creating music because it is more chaotic. Admit that you don't like the sound and be done with it but don't discredit one of the most influential bands of the last 20 years for creating one of the best albums of the last ten. Most of the hardcore and metal you listen to and have commented on in the past wouldn't even exist without the influence of this band. I mean come on, you gave The Acacia Strain a 4, your standard of heavy music can't be that high.

1. I highly doubt Britney Spears writes her own music.

2. If she did, I'm certain it would be better than Converge's attempt.

Hahahha.

This very response and mindset about this band is the very reason I went out of my way to insert a facepalm.jpg into this feature, if you couldn't tell. It's not about this band's 'music' being my style, it's far beyond that. And the fact that you also had to mention that your musical genius friends think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread means nothing. Also, musical tastes change a lot. I'm glad you had to pull out a review of something I wouldn't listen to anymore, hence me not writing for Decoy anymore due to the tastes of this site varying to what I would listen to nowadays.

If this means I may end up liking Converge one day; I highly doubt it. But I can only hope you will come to realize what you think is considered 'revolutionary in the heavy music realm' is simply not even fucking close. I however will not argue with anyone anymore. I said what I wanted, continue forth with masturbation over yet another overrated pile of mess.

All I can say is, dude, you are so fucking cool. I wish my musical tastes were as advanced and as developed as yours.

I included the bit about my music theory friends because you are trying to argue that they didn't create music, which is quite frankly, wrong.

Arguing about the merit of this band and all that it has accomplished over the past 20 years will be completely wasted on you because it doesn't contain shredding or tinges of post rock. Come back when you like a more diverse spectrum of music.

Also, in before pictures about how the internet is serious business.

I'm not doubting your music taste, Chris. I enjoy several of the groups that you mention in your blog (Kaospilot, Katatonia and Altar of Plagues for example); I just found it humorous that you gave albums that are average at best a 5/5 (and will probably fellate the new BTBAM album to death despite the fact that the group can't write a cohesive song to save their lives), yet give Axe To Fall a 0.5/5. To each their own I suppose...

i find it humorous we are arguing about peoples tastes right now.  and that you decided to stop writing for Decoy because of this.  that's pretty ignorant, people write here to help push their musical tastes to more of an audience, if that's why you chose to stop that would be retarded.  features are put up to incite discussion, whether you agree or disagree which is all I can ask for, so with that in mind, I don't like Converge, but I had hoped to spark some discussion going both ways about the band.

I don't want to give you that impression. I just found it hard to choose from the list of albums to review after awhile. That's how I meant it, not in that people's tastes at decoy are shit lol. Sorry if I worded that poorly.

if i were to visualize what this band looked like based on their sound, they would look exactly like they do.  having said that, i like the new album better than the past two, even though i thought those also were pretty good as well.

current listenings:
Of Virtue - "Heartsounds"
Capsule - "No Ghost"
Century - "Red Giant"
James Vincent McMorrow - "Early In The Morning"
Blind Pilot - "We Are The Tide"

I think the idea and general basis of what Converge did alone push anything they've done in the spot light of good.

My sister had an art assignment for SCAD that was supposed to make the classmates annoyed or uneasy so she played a Converge song that she got from my computer. Most people cant comprehend what is even remotely appealing about Converge and I think that has to with him screaming like a rabid dog.On a musical basis I have a hard time explaining to other people why I like Converge other then they create a certain intensity that I feel few bands can convey.
I believe Chris doesn't like Converge because they follow more of a punk/hardcore template then metal.

After all these comments I couldn't help but go straight for a listen, and I realized, despite the several times I've come across this band, never really put attention at all. The outcome is that I don't see myself liking this release and won't check older ones... but this sounds far from being generic and boring, can get the appeal and, for me at least, it's an interesting listen.

Thanks for your open-mindedness, xRinox. I have a hard time understanding how anyone could call Converge generic and/or boring.

Also, on an unrelated note, I've spent time in Miraflores and Pachacamac - both are wonderful places.

The first time I listened to Converge I could not stand them I thought they were too loud and terrible. However I decided to give them another chance because all of the praise that they have been given over the years. I decided to listen to Jane Doe all the way through with an open mind. Since then I have been a huge fan of anything that they have put out. The intensity that exists in every single album that they release is unmatched by any band that I have ever heard.

i don't see why anyone would care about what this converge-hater has to say. i mean, he gave the new baroness record like 1 star on top of giving the same rating to the converge record. it's obvious he has no clue what music like this is supposed to sound like. if it's not your style, that's fine, but you can't argue that this band doesn't have artistic merit or ability.
